I wrote Tuesday that voters are rapidly losing faith in both Republicans and Democrats. They see them as two sides of the same coin, incapable of fixing our problems precisely because they are too invested in perpetuating the existing system. We’re just as much to blame by the way, because we keep re-electing them — perpetuating the same “career politician” mindset that we claim to loathe.
In short, we’ve come to rely on the political class to keep us well fed and safe rather than taking responsibility for our own well being. It’s an easy trap to fall into. When you’re cozy, comfortable and taken care of it’s very easy to grow complacent.
As a general rule, I believe Democrats keep us dependent and Republicans keep us afraid. This is the source of their power. There has been one candidate in the presidential race who has been warning us of the consequence of surrendering our power to the political class, but the Stepford News Readers in the mainstream media pay him no attention.
Ron Paul has been warning us for years that our reliance on the government to keep us safe and well fed would result in some really nasty stuff — a shocking erosion in our civil liberties; a basket case of a foreign policy that has us mired in conflicts across the globe; the state using the threat of terror to massively expand the size and scope of the federal government; a housing bubble caused by special privileges granted to Fannie, Freddie and Wall Street. The list goes on and on. In the video below, it’s amazing how prescient Paul’s warnings have been.
Here’s something else you may not have known. Through the second quarter of this year, Paul has received twice as much money from military members as all other GOP presidential candidates combined. He may be ignored throughout mainstream media, but military members are sure paying enthusiastic attention to what he has to say. Maybe it’s time for the rest of us to start paying attention.
